What is Performance-based Navigation (PBN: RNAV/RNP)?

Performance-based Navigation (PBN) flight procedures leverage global positioning systems and satellite technology for piloting aircraft. PBN is a term that encompasses several types of precision navigation methods that reduce negative aviation-related environmental impacts, while optimizing airspace usage and improving operational efficiencies for aircraft. Required-performance Navigation (RNP) and Area Navigation (RNAV) are two examples of PBN procedures that are being implemented under the Federal Aviaiton Administration's airspace modernization efforts called NextGen.
